What is the Microsoft IQ stack?

Four capabilities under one name. Microsoft IQ is the layer that hands agents a shared understanding of your business, so each agent does not have to work out how your company runs from fragmented data. It is the first card in the product grid above.

The split is by what kind of context each one carries. Work IQ reads the human side, Fabric IQ the operational side, Foundry IQ the knowledge agents reuse, Web IQ the world outside your tenant.

Work IQ

Captures how work happens. It reasons over the unstructured side of Microsoft 365: files, emails, meetings, chats plus the business systems connected to them.

Fabric IQ

Models how the business operates. Semantic models and ontologies sit over data unified in OneLake so agents can reason in the language of the business.

Foundry IQ

Enables agents to discover and reuse knowledge. Microsoft describes it as the knowledge-grounding layer where entities, relationships and ontologies keep reasoning aligned with enterprise truth.

What did Microsoft learn running Work IQ on its own tenant?

Microsoft Digital, the company’s own IT organization, ran Work IQ at enterprise scale before customers could, then published what it found. Short version: the technology needed no rollout project. The data habits around it did.

Worth reading before you plan your own rollout, because the lessons that mattered are about behaviour rather than configuration.

What Microsoft Digital reported

No adoption campaign at launch. There was no formal product implementation when Work IQ went live internally. It behaves as ambient infrastructure that nearly every workstream benefits from.
Meeting transcription is the foundation. Without transcripts a significant portion of meeting insights stays inaccessible to the intelligence layer. Microsoft calls making transcription standard a cultural shift as much as a technical one.
Usage grew through people, not settings. Microsoft credits employee-driven champions programs, scenario-based learning plus timely internal communications. It states that internal AI usage grew “from a few thousand users to hundreds of thousands across the company”.
Persistent memory mattered more than expected. Employee feedback said people should not have to keep re-explaining who they are or what they are working on. Work IQ now helps Copilot remember user history and tailor responses, so a communicator gets a summary where an engineer gets the technical detail.
Context that surprised teams was never new access. When teams were struck by how much Copilot could surface, investigation showed the underlying data access already existed. Work IQ made existing relationships more visible without changing permissions.
Treat it as shared infrastructure, not a feature to deploy. Microsoft reports the value compounds when governance, learning and trust are in place first.

What it changed in Outlook

Outlook is where Microsoft Digital says its people carry the heaviest cognitive load of the day, so it is where the internal account gets most specific. Two behaviours do the work.

Priority scoring ranks the inbox. Copilot reasons across email signals, conversation history, meeting patterns plus calendar behaviour to work out what needs attention first. Microsoft is explicit that this goes past keywords and unread status. It also reports proactive nudges that surface what changed.
Thread summaries name owners and decisions. A long thread gets a summary highlighting owners, decisions made plus next steps. Someone added to the thread late or back from time away can pick up a complex conversation without digging through every past message.
Nothing to configure. No commands to learn, no rules to create. Microsoft Digital frames the change as the inbox gradually feeling more relevant, with Outlook adapting to how someone works rather than the reverse.

How Microsoft states it

Transcripts create a durable, searchable record that Work IQ can connect to documents and actions, helping employees quickly understand what happened, even if they weren’t present.

Meeting transcription is the key. Making sure all meetings are transcribed is essential for Work IQ, so it can build context on how work happens in your organization. This is a technical and cultural change that you need to facilitate and encourage.

Researcher agent

Can an agent turn a meeting into finished documentation?

Microsoft Digital says yes. Its own worked example is a process map. A senior product manager ran a free-form process-mapping discussion as a Teams meeting with a few members of Microsoft Legal. Days later he put the meeting transcript into the Copilot Researcher agent and asked it to generate a structured SIPOC diagram with the documentation to match.

SIPOC is Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, Customers. No visuals were shared in the meeting. The agent worked from what people said out loud plus what it already knew about their work.

Why a transcript was enough

The problem was findability. Microsoft’s internal legal team was struggling to find specific content in its data lake, which holds tens of thousands of documents, articles plus other content items.
Recording the meeting is the input step. Transcripts, speaker contributions, shared content plus AI-generated summaries get captured automatically and folded into the attendees’ ongoing work context. No manual note-taking, no follow-up write-up.
Work IQ connected the transcript outward. It was linked to the people involved, the SharePoint sites they used plus similar work done elsewhere in the organization, rather than sitting there as a static artifact.
Memory is the other half of it. Knowing whose work this is shapes what comes back. That was one of the findings in what Microsoft learned running Work IQ on itself.
The data never left the tenant. Microsoft draws that as the difference from third-party meeting tools. Permissions plus sensitivity labels are honored throughout, so a conversation becomes a durable input for later work without adding risk or effort.

“Based just on what people shared in that meeting, and what it knows about their work and about SIPOC diagrams, Researcher was able to generate a fully formed, detailed solution for me.”

Governance

Does Work IQ give AI access to data people cannot already see?

No. It adds no new data to Microsoft 365 and it changes no permissions. What it changes is how visible the connections between existing data are. That difference is why data hygiene becomes a prerequisite rather than a nice-to-have.

The boundaries Microsoft describes

The data has to already live in your tenant or be connected through an approved connector.
The person asking has to already have permission to open it.
Tenant-level admin policy, compliance plus sensitivity controls still apply on top.
Sensitivity labels travel to derived output. The label on a source document sets the label on any summary or insight generated from it.
Meeting labels classify everything downstream: recordings, transcripts, notes.
Discoverable is not extractable. Copilot can understand that a Highly Confidential document shaped a decision without being able to reveal its contents to someone who lacks access.
One internal incident had a sensitive document reachable through a Copilot query. The root cause was a missing sensitivity label rather than Work IQ. Microsoft fixed the label at the source.
The trade-off is real. Reaching data through Work IQ means an agent can reason across everything the employee can reach, which simplifies enablement while raising the bar on your governance foundation.

The fact that Work IQ does not introduce new data into Microsoft 365 makes meeting this commitment easier.

The label effectively travels with the data, reinforcing both user awareness and policy enforcement.
