Outside calling

How do you call outside phone numbers from Microsoft Teams?

Teams on its own reaches other Teams users. A landline or a mobile number means connecting to the public switched telephone network. Teams Phone gives you four ways to do that, one of which is Microsoft acting as your carrier.

Microsoft Teams calling plansChoose Microsoft as your operator with this all-in-one cloud calling solution.
Teams Phone MobileIntegrate your users’ mobile identities, assign a single number, and implement a solution that works across networks and devices.
Operator ConnectChoose a fully managed solution that is fast and easy to deploy, allowing you to connect phone numbers from participating operators.
Direct RoutingConnect your session border controllers (SBC) to Teams Phone to use your own operator.

Microsoft’s labels for each pathway, from the Teams Phone product page. A PSTN solution is separate from a Teams Phone license (note 3).

How Microsoft states it

Teams Phone provides complete PBX capabilities for your organization, enabling you to make calls with other Teams users through the Teams app. However, if you need to make calls to numbers outside of your organization, you’ll need to connect to the PSTN. Teams Phone provides valuable flexibility for connecting to the PSTN, through Teams Calling Plans, Teams Phone Mobile, Operator Connect, and/or Direct Routing.

If you already hold carrier contracts, Operator Connect or Direct Routing keep them. If you would rather have one bill, a Microsoft calling plan is the route. Teams Phone pricing has what each one costs.

Teams Phone pricing

What does Teams Phone cost?

Four SKUs. What separates them is minutes rather than features. The $10.00 line is the phone system by itself, so it carries no Microsoft calling plan.

Teams Phone Standard$10.00 user/month, paid yearly. A fully featured cloud-based calling solution native to Teams. A phone system that does not include a Microsoft-provided calling plan, for customers who wish to bring their own calling plan from a service provider.
Teams Phone with pay-as-you-go calling (country zone 1 - US)$13.00 user/month, paid yearly. Includes Teams Phone Standard, plus a phone number with metered outbound calling minutes from Microsoft.
Teams Phone with Calling Plan (country zone 1 - US)$17.00 user/month, paid yearly. Includes Teams Phone Standard, plus a phone number with 3,000 outbound domestic calling minutes from Microsoft for the US, UK, and Canada. For the rest of the world that number is 1,200 outbound domestic minutes.
Teams Phone with domestic and international calling$34.00 user/month, paid yearly. Includes Teams Phone Standard, plus a phone number with 3,000 outbound domestic or 600 outbound international calling minutes from Microsoft for the US, UK, and Canada. For the rest of the world it is 1,200 outbound domestic or 600 outbound international.

Annual subscription, auto renews. The three calling-plan prices include communication taxes and fees. A separate license for Microsoft Teams is required. Calling and audio-conferencing rates may apply. Teams Phone with Calling Plan is available in specific markets. Pricing as of August 2026 and subject to change. Request a quote for reseller pricing.

What the Teams Phone Standard license covers

Cloud-based phone system
Make and receive voice and video calls over PSTN or an internet connection
Add PSTN service with Teams Calling Plans, Operator Connect or Direct Routing
Combine mobile calling plans from participating operators with Teams Phone Mobile
Join calls from a range of devices and seamlessly transfer calls between devices
99.999% uptime SLA
A separate license for Microsoft Teams is required

That last line is the one people miss at renewal. Teams Phone Standard shows up as a $10.00 add-on on Microsoft 365 business plans and pricing, next to the plans it attaches to. On the enterprise side the phone system is already in some licenses: which enterprise plans include Teams Phone has that split.

Before you buy

What do you need in place before adding Teams Phone?

A Teams license. The phone system is an add-on, so it attaches to a subscription that already carries Teams. Worth checking before you price seats.

Teams subscriptions include Teams Phone, which enables calls from one Teams app to another.
The ability to make and receive calls to and from landlines and mobile phones through the PSTN is available as an add-on with the Teams Phone Standard, Teams Phone with Calling Plan, or Microsoft 365 E5 subscriptions.
Teams Phone with Calling Plan can be added onto Microsoft Teams Essentials, Microsoft Teams Enterprise, or Microsoft 365 and Office 365 subscriptions that have a Teams license.
As of October 2023, some Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites no longer include Teams. Subscribers to those plans must purchase a Teams license separately.
A prepaid wallet (known as Communications Credits) is available for adding toll-free, additional minutes, and other pay-per-minute charges.

Microsoft names Microsoft 365 E5 as already including a phone system and audio conferencing, so E5 tenants are buying minutes rather than the system. Everything below E5 is the add-on path. The with-Teams versions of the business plans sit on Microsoft 365 business plans and pricing.

Not sure which side of that line you are on? Send us your current license mix and we will price the phone piece against it.
