What discount do nonprofits actually get on Microsoft 365?
There is no separate nonprofit price list. Nonprofit rates hang off the commercial ones at a fixed percentage discount, 60-75% on the impacted products. That is why the E5 and E3 staff prices above moved when commercial pricing moved in July.
| Nonprofit discount rate | 60-75% on the impacted products |
|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Business Premium | Available at a 75% discount for eligible nonprofits |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on | Available at a 15% discount for eligible nonprofits, $25.50 (USD) per user/month paid yearly |
| Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 | Nonprofit staff pricing at $9.75 and $24.00 user/month, paid yearly |
Microsoft’s published nonprofit figures. Prices on this page are current as of August 2026.
Grants and discounts are not the same thing
The split decides who can hold a seat, which matters more than the rate once you are counting licenses. Microsoft’s wording:
Nonprofit grants are permitted only for paid nonprofit employees, and unpaid executive staff who act as leadership for the nonprofit. Nonprofit discounts are permitted for all nonprofit staff and volunteers. Nonprofit program participants, members, and donors are NOT eligible for nonprofit licenses and subscriptions.
Fewer than 300 staff? Business Premium sits in the business family, so its pricing lives on Microsoft 365 business plans and the plan detail on Microsoft 365 Business Premium. Past that line the E3 and E5 staff prices are the ones to compare against the commercial rates on Microsoft 365 enterprise plans. Ask for a quote to get both costed.
How do the volunteer seats for nonprofits work?
Volunteer seats hang off your paid staff seats. For each licensed Microsoft 365 E3/E5 seat, nonprofits can receive up to 5 additional Microsoft 365 F3 seats for volunteers.
| Volunteer seats per staff seat | Up to 5 additional Microsoft 365 F3 seats |
|---|---|
| Qualifying staff seat | A licensed Microsoft 365 E3 seat at $9.75 or Microsoft 365 E5 seat at $24.00 user/month |
| Volunteer seat SKU | Microsoft 365 F3 |
| Who decides eligibility | Microsoft has sole discretion for determining eligibility |
Microsoft states the ratio on its Microsoft 365 for nonprofits page. It publishes no price for the volunteer seats there, so the seat count is the known quantity and the cost is a quote question.
What the volunteer seat is
What the benefit does not settle
The seats are F3, not a second copy of E3 or E5, so what a volunteer can do is whatever Microsoft 365 F3 covers. A volunteer seat also still has to go to a volunteer: the eligibility split above rules out program participants, members and donors. Microsoft publishes the ratio plus that rule. It does not publish a functional carve-out for volunteer seats, so do not plan around one.
Did nonprofit prices change on July 1, 2026?
Yes, on most of the list. Nonprofit rates moved because commercial rates moved. Microsoft’s wording: nonprofit pricing will be adjusted in line with commercial pricing, as it is tied to commercial rates through a fixed percentage discount.
| Microsoft 365 E5 | $22.80 to $24.00 user/month, up 5% |
|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 E3 | $9.00 to $9.75 user/month, up 8% |
| Microsoft 365 F3 | $2.00 to $2.50 user/month, up 25% |
| Microsoft 365 Business Premium | $5.50 user/month. No change |
| Microsoft 365 Business Standard | $3.00 to $3.50 user/month, up 17% |
| Microsoft 365 Business Basic | Free |
Microsoft’s published nonprofit figures for the suites with Teams, effective July 1, 2026. This pricelist pricing is subject to change and may vary by country and currency.
What E3 and E5 gained on the same date
New capabilities began rolling out in June 2026 with a 30-day Message Center notice per tenant, complete by August 1, 2026. Existing customers remain on current pricing until renewal, so the date that decides your bill is your anniversary rather than July 1. The commercial equivalents sit on Microsoft 365 enterprise plans.

Frequently asked questions
What technology grants and discounts does Microsoft provide for nonprofits?
Microsoft provides grants and discounts for eligible nonprofit organizations, including cloud services such as Microsoft 365, Azure and Dynamics 365, Surface hardware, on-premises software, and digital skilling. Please note that not every program may be available in every country.
If a library or library system is run by a city or county government (federal or state)—do they still get nonprofit pricing?
Microsoft recognizes the critical role that public libraries and public museums play in society. These customers will be provided access to nonprofit pricing even if they do not hold recognized nonprofit legal status (equal to 501(c)(3) status under the United States Internal Revenue Code).
Which persons affiliated with the nonprofit organization are eligible to receive donated or discounted user licenses?
Grants go to paid staff. Discounts reach volunteers too. See how grants and discounts differ for Microsoft’s full wording on who qualifies.
How long does it take to receive eligibility validation?
Microsoft makes the determination, not the reseller. Its published guidance:
We strive to make eligibility determinations as quickly as possible, and the process can take up to 3 business days. This timeframe can vary depending on nonprofit responsiveness to requests for additional documentation and country requirements.
What are the terms on the Microsoft nonprofit offer?
Offer available only to eligible nonprofit organizations, as defined at eligibility guidelines. Microsoft has sole discretion for determining eligibility. Limit one offer per organization. This offer is non-transferable and cannot be combined with any other offer. This offer is not redeemable for cash. Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the organization. Offer is intended for the sole benefit and use of the organization and is not provided for personal use or benefit of any individual employee.
